The South African Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (SAHPA) is the governing recreation sport authority for hang gliding and paragliding and powered paragliding and powered hang gliding in South Africa.  CAA recognizes and authorizes SAHPA to issue licenses to its members, through the Aero Club of South Africa, on behalf of CAA.  SAHPA is answerable to both AeCSA and CAA.

SAHPA’s mission statement is:

To promote, protect and administer hang gliding and paragliding in South Africa.

BASIC License

On completion of your Basic License you will receive your license and an IPPI card.  This will enable you to fly in South Africa and the rest of the world.  If you are residentHG and PG Tandem at Map in another country other than South Africa, these two licenses will be recognized by your governing body for paragliding and will enable you to convert to their equivalent rated license.

Licensed Visitors to South Africa

It is a legal requirement that a visiting pilot has to have a SAHPA temporary licence (in other words, the foreign licence must be ratified in South Africa).  Flying without the SAHPA temporary licence is an illegal act, and could impact on insurances held by the pilot, even in his country of origin.

On arriving with us, we can supply you with the correct form and can take payment on behalf of SAHPA.

Pilots who pay instructors for the temporary licence must retain the slip at the bottom of the form as proof of payment and SA licence.  They may follow up with the SAHPA office if they have or perceive any problems.

This license includes the following:

  • Radio License - to use the designated frequencies in South Africa, one has to have a licence, which SAHPA is empowered to issue.
  • Third party and site insurance - Although it is acknowledged that most pilots have valid third party insurance from their country of origin, the insurers have as yet not shown willingness to cover visiting pilots with the site insurances required by land owners without the third party insurance also being paid up. It is a group insurance. The insurers are also not inclined to accept pro rata payments and require a full annual fee per pilot. (It is hoped that these items can be re-negotiated in future.)
